Our Spotlight on Super series highlights the SRC team members who help keep SRC a great place to work and grow. For this installment, we sat down with Billy King, a 2-year SRC employee who currently holds the title of Production Manager at SRC’s Richmond, Virginia division.
BK: I was born in New York and moved here from Long Island when I was around 9 to live with my aunt after my mom passed away. We lived there for a year or so, then my dad ended up getting remarried and we moved out to the Woodlake area. I’m the youngest of five and all my other siblings were grown, so we all just lived there together and pitched in rent. Then, I moved out to Richmond when I was in my early 20s.
Q: What were you doing before coming to SRC?
BK: I was working at another production facility making pre-fabricated components for homebuilders. I started there as a saw guy – just running a giant saw all day cutting thousands of two-by-fours, then I worked as a framer, and eventually as a specialty framer, which was still framing, but it was for the trickier stuff. After that, I became a lead. I was there for about six years and then started looking for something else.
Q: How did you come to work at SRC? What’s the story there?
BK: I was looking around and reached out to Super Radiator Coils. It was a culture thing. At the last place I worked, it was pretty much just a ‘churn and burn’ mentality – it was all about performance and hitting your numbers, all that. I was only there for six years or so, and I was pretty much the most senior guy in the shop. It was all a numbers game, and after a while that just burns you out. So
I found SRC online and was just kind of poking around, wasn’t necessarily set in stone or anything, but I started looking to see what was out there. I hadn’t heard of the company prior to coming on board, but I applied, and Matt, the VP called me one night – I was working second shift at the time – and they invited me in for an interview. So, I went in for the interview and at first, I was thinking “wow, this place is too good for me.” But I did the interview, it went pretty well, and then Chris (Sheehan, Director of Manufacturing) called me back a couple days later and offered me a job and I’ve been here ever since. I love it.
Q: What was your role when you first joined the company and what is the nature of your current role?
BK: Originally, I joined the company as a second shift supervisor. It wasn’t really in any specific department, just wherever the shop needed. After that, I moved to first shift where I was the supervisor for the header department. Then I moved to a senior supervisor where I was overseeing more areas of the shop, and then they asked me to step in as production manager, so these days I’m overseeing all areas of the shop day-to-day – making sure the team has what they need to do a good job, making sure we’ve got the right levels of staffing for each department, and just trying to make as many coils as we can. It’s been a lot of fun.
Q: What do you like most about working at SRC?
BK: The people. I think – especially in something like production – it’s all about who you’re with. It really makes a difference, and luckily for me, I work with the best.
Q: What about when you’re not at work? How do you like to spend your time?
BK: Mainly I like to hang out with friends and family. I used to play a lot of guitar but haven’t really had the time lately. And I like to watch TV when I have a time and I’m a big walker – never was a fan of running, but I definitely enjoy walking.
